Blackburn Rovers – relegated. It’s no surprise but seeing it in black and white isn’t nice.

As is always the way with these things people look for someone to blame. Anyone suggesting Rovers fans should bear some responsibility is either deluded or an idiot.

These are not fans with ideas above their station. These are fans who know their club and where it should be in football’s pecking order. Before Venky’s and Kean rolled into town Rovers were a well respected and established Premier League club. Fast forward 18 months and the landscape’s changed somewhat. When you consider what the fans have had to put up with during that time, it’s little wonder they’ve taken to venting their anger.

Player sales weakening a decent squad, false promises of investment, ridiculous statements of ambition, a refusal to acknowledge the plight the club is in and a sickening PR campaign designed to paint Kean as some kind of saint, are just a handful of the issues which have led Rovers’ fans to voice their concerns.

Take what’s happened at Ewood in the last year and a half and apply it to your own club. Would you sit there and say nothing? Thought not.

Suggestions that Kean has acted with dignity or doesn’t deserve the grief he’s received are wide of the mark too. His role in Big Sam’s removal still leaves a bad taste in the mouth, as does his association with agent Jerome Anderson (remember his sickening appearance on Sky Sports News?).

Tactically he’s inept at best, his record in the transfer market is appalling and results record even worse. Yet Venky’s still stuck by him. Those of you saying he deserves some kind of praise need a reality check. Would you want him at your club? Thought not.

All of which brings us round to the owners.

Are they simply naive? Have they been on a mission to asset strip the club? Perhaps just badly advised? Maybe we’ll never know, but the simple truth of the matter is they’ve taken a team who where comfortably surviving in the Premier League and fast-tracked it to the Championship in little over a year. Would you want that for your club? Thought not.

With regard to the future it’s pointless saying what needs to happen because normal rules don’t seem to apply with Venky’s or Kean. If the club are ever to return to the top flight then both need to go – whether it happens remains to be seen.

While they are here the fans should be supported in their quest to rid their club of those responsible for its demise. If they were at your club you’d do the same – wouldn’t you?

These past few weeks have been like watching a loved one slowly die.

You want to help, but you know there’s nothing you can do to stop the inevitable.

Sunday’s surrender at White Hart Lane left Rovers needing a miracle – and they’re in short supply around these parts.

Even if they can overcome Wigan, there’s still the small matter of a last day trip to Stamford Bridge. Don’t be fooled by those who say they’ll be taking it easy ahead of the Champions League final – their demolition of QPR proves otherwise.

All of which leaves us with the prospect of trips to the likes of Barnsley and Peterborough next year. The more optimistic types will tell you relegation will mean a guaranteed six points against Burnley next season. With Kean and Venky’s still at the helm it wouldn’t be wise to wager any hard earned cash on that.

Whether they both stay remains to be seen. The Sunday People claims Venky’s are trying to sell the club - they say they’re not, with Rovers director Vineeth Rao stating, “It is not true, none of that. We have no plans to sell Blackburn Rovers, none at all. Even if the club got relegated, which is not in our thoughts, we are not planning to sell.”

Relegation not in their thoughts? Is there no end to the level they’ll stoop to try and insult the fans’ intelligence?

Kean once again gave us his ‘I know better than you’ act as he hit back at comments made by pundits about the performance at Spurs. For some strange reason it’s taken too long for much of the media to break ranks when it comes to criticising Kean, but Gary Neville, Ray Wilkins and Glenn Hoddle finally stepped up to the mark and told it how it is.

Perhaps now the rest will follow and crank the pressure up on both the owners and manager. It’s clear neither have paid any attention to the views of the fans – maybe they’ll listen to experienced professionals.

Whatever the final two games of the season brings, much needs to change at Ewood. New ownership would be a good start. If, as they claim, the club won’t be sold then accepting they made a huge mistake appointing Kean and replacing him with a proper manager, would be the first small step towards building bridges with the fans. This needs to be followed by a decent level of investment in the squad regardless of which division the club ends up in.

The next few weeks will tell us much about the direction the club are heading. If things stay as they are then League One in 12 months time is a very real possibility.

“We won’t get relegated – absolutely no chance.” – Steve Kean, November 2011.

“I think we need two wins and a draw.” Steve Kean, April 2012.

This from home games against Norwich and Wigan, with trips to Spurs and Chelsea thrown in? Good luck with that.

Relegation is beginning to look nailed on and the inevitable questions to be asked could be endless. Why haven’t Venky’s invested like they said they would? Why have players been sold and replaced by inferior ones? What happened to European football? You could go on forever.

While Venky’s have clearly misled the fans, Steve Kean’s role in this sorry shambles can’t be ignored – despite the best efforts of certain folk in the media.

Perhaps the worst recent example of this was the Daily Mirror’s Brian Reade, who treated us to some real gems.

“If Steve Kean keeps Blackburn up but doesn’t win Manager of the Year there is only one course of action open to the man who does,” wrote Read. “Decline it, on the grounds that the adversity Kean has overcome, and the manner in which he has overcome it, has done more for their profession’s reputation than one man winning any amount of trophies could ever achieve.”

Not content with insulting everyone’s intelligence, Reade adds to the misery by getting all excited after Rovers managed to beat the might of Wolves and Sunderland by predicting they’d avoid the drop. Football tipping isn’t a strong point of Reade’s it seems.

Does Kean deserve such lofty praise? The facts suggest otherwise.

Assuming an award like this is based on someone doing something of merit, let’s start with Kean’s league record. P12, D13, L29. Otherwise known as relegation form.

Reade argued Venky’s lack of financial support for Kean is a major factor in where things have ended up, and while it’s true they haven’t done what they said they’d do, his argument is badly flawed.

Kean’s main signings have been Yakubu, Goodwillie, Petrovic, Vukcevic, Dann, Orr, Modeste, Formica, Rochina, Ribeiro, Slew, Anderson and Marcus Olsson. Total outlay around £22 million. Successes? Yakubu.

For the same money he could have bought Nikica Jelavic, Jonny Howson, Pavel Pogrebnyak, John Arne Riise, Anthony Pilkington, Ryan Bennett and Luke Young, with Gylfi Sigurdsson, Josh McEachran and Dedryck Boyata on loan.

So that’s over a season of shocking results and a record in player recruitment which isn’t even average. Factor in poor tactical decisions and an inability to man-manage players (Samba, Givet etc) and a more realistic picture emerges of the job Kean’s done.

Venky’s part in this situation shouldn’t be ignored, but anyone suggesting Kean’s done a great job in the face of adversity misses the point that much of it is self-inflicted.

Steve Kean may be many things – Manager of the Year isn’t one of them.

“It’s a good time to be playing them” has to be one of the most annoying phrases used in football.

Yet again it was randomly thrown around before Liverpool‘s visit to Ewood last night and yet again it was shown to be nothing more than foolish nonsense.

2-0 down inside 16 minutes, then handed a lifeline when the Reds are reduced to ten men, Rovers managed to claw themselves back into the game before throwing away what may prove to be a crucial point. Good time to play them? Clearly not.

Typically Steve Kean blamed the ref, but looking elsewhere for excuses just doesn’t cut it. Rovers are in the bottom three for a reason and it isn’t referees.

Could anyone say with confidence they think the current playing staff has enough quality for the Premier League? You’d be hard pushed to suggest they’d have the tools available to be a force in the Championship if they are relegated.

Looking at last night’s squad makes grim reading if Rovers do go down.

Paul Robinson would surely be snapped up by someone, while Bradley Orr is a mid-table Championship player at best. There’s a reason why Scott Dann was ignored by the big clubs – he can’t defend - and Grant Hanley made Andy Carroll look great. Martin Olsson isn’t a left back and wouldn’t stay, while his brother Marcus is quick and that’s about it.

Steven N’Zonzi looks like he can’t be bothered so he’d be off and David Dunn’s days as a professional footballer should be ended. Can’t run, can’t tackle and his best days are long gone.

The world and his wife seem to be raving about Junior Hoilett and he does have the potential to be a match winner. Despite that he’s far too inconsistent, often lacks end product and isn’t going to stay. The same could be said of Mauro Formica and Ruben Rochina, while Yakubu would certainly be a target for the promoted clubs at the very least.

Radoslav Petrovic hasn’t shown the English game suits him, David Goodwillie isn’t “a young Wayne Rooney” but might do a job at Championship level and Morten Gamst Pedersen hasn’t played well since the Mark Hughes days.

Gael Givet could be the rock on which a promotion bid is based, but would he want to stick around? Jason Lowe could be captain material a level down, but sub keeper Jake Kean’s only senior experience was in League One.

There’s hardly a wealth of talent after that, while anyone expecting an explosion of players to come through from this year’s youth team crop will be very disappointed – history shows not many make the step up.

All that is hardly a glowing appraisal of Steve Kean’s ability when it comes to building a team and doesn’t even take into account the Venky’s factor.

Whatever the outcome this season, Rovers are a mess. A squad which isn’t suitable for either the Premier League or the Championship – that really takes some doing.

Vince Grella. Otherwise known as Vince Who? to the majority of Premier League fans.

Signed for around £4million from Torino in 2008 by Paul Ince, Grella has gone on to etch his name in Rovers’ folklore as a true legend of the club. Sorry, scratch that, Grella has gone on to achieve precisely nothing.

In four seasons at Ewood, he’s started 29 league games. Other than that he can lay claim to being one of the most expensive treatment table covers ever purchased, at around £30k per week.

Despite this he did manage to make it to the 2010 World Cup with Australia. Impressive stuff until you remember he lasted just 45 minutes against Germany, before limping off with yet another injury.

Now his time in Blackburn appears to be over, after he announced he’ll be leaving in June and expects to play in Italy next year. Quite what he thinks he’ll be playing is another matter.

When any player leaves, it’s natural for fans to fondly remember the good times. A great performance, maybe a wonder goal; something which can be stored in the memory banks to discuss over a pint in later years.

Grella’s highlight was a game from April 2009. Against Middlesborough Reserves.

Yes, a reserve game was the pinnacle of four years and £4million. In a team containing Danny Simpson and Benni McCarthy, Grella lasted a whole ninety minutes.

In fairness he looked half-decent, but even on the night which would prove to be the high-point of his Rovers career, he still wasn’t the best player on the park. That honour fell to Bryan Hodge. He’s at Brechin City now, which just about sums things up.

Rovers have made some bad signings down the years – Norman Bell, Jimmy Quinn & Corrado Grabbi spring to mind – but Grella is right up there with them.

So well done Ince for a wonderful piece of business. £4million? It’s a good job it was someone else’s money.

Goodbye and good riddance Vince. Thanks for nothing.

Hands up everyone who thought Rovers were safe?

After winning two in a row for the first time in ages, it was back down to earth with a bump as a fired-up Bolton team made a mockery of those who thought safety was a formality.

Rovers may yet escape but it’s likely to go to the wire and even if they do, it’ll be nothing to shout from the rooftops about.

Which brings us nicely to the latest in a long of comments from yet another ‘expert’ on the situation at Ewood. This time it’s Fergie.

The same Fergie who slammed Venky’s for removing his big chum Sam Allardyce from the Rovers hot-seat, now reckons Steve Kean deserves “100% percent praise from everyone.”

Quite what for is anyone’s guess, but if that wasn’t enough he follows up with a few more nuggets.

“I’m sure a lot of them are saying to themselves, ‘I wish I hadn’t done that’.”

Really? Where are all these hidden fans who regret levelling criticism at a man who’s taken a top ten team and turned it into relegation fodder?

“Now no-one is talking about fans having protest marches.”

Are you sure? That’s not the message coming from the BRFC Action Group. But of course, it’s Sir Alex Ferguson. Clearly he knows best.

“He has shown his mettle in times when it was difficult for him.”

Stop laughing at the back. “Difficult?” Any difficulties have been of Kean’s own making. Along with the owners, Kean hasn’t “shown his mettle”, he’s been an integral part of a process which has sent Rovers lurching from one disaster to another.

Quite why Fergie feels qualified to poke his nose in where it doesn’t belong is a mystery. The simple fact of the matter is the only people who truly understand the situation at Ewood are the fans.

To suggest Kean deserves ”100% praise from everyone” is, quite frankly, the biggest heap of garbage which has ever come tumbling out of Fergie’s mouth.

Sir Alex Ferguson – you are hereby bringing the game into disrepute.

Despite the positivity on the pitch, nothing’s really changed off it. The club still has owners who don’t communicate and a manager who’s about as popular with the fans as a fox in a hen-house.

There’s been a few whispers in the stands the protests against Steve Kean should stop and he “deserves a chance”. It appears the majority still feel less than happy with Venky’s.

Whether Kean stays as manager in the long-run remains to be seen – the owners seem delighted with him regardless of results – but it’s those owners who need to come clean about their intentions for the club.

After over a year of lies and false promises the fans deserve some answers. With further protests being considered over the coming weeks, it’s clear the fans are continuing to fight for their club.

Allowing a couple of decent results to cloud the bigger picture could be dangerous.

If Rovers do avoid relegation will the owners invest in the team in the summer? If they went down would they provide enough funds to ensure the club bounced straight back?

The list of unanswered questions is probably endless, but it’s the lack of communication which really winds the fans up.

Rumours coming out of the BRFC Action Group have suggested the club are willing to meet with the protesters, but unwilling for the content of the meeting to be shared with the fans at large. Quite how they think that’s helpful is anyone’s guess.

While the owners stay away from Ewood and refuse to engage in open dialogue, it simply adds fuel to the fire and does no-one any favours.

If they really are genuine and honourable people then surely it makes sense to explain once and for all their vision for the club. No lies. No spin. Just cold, hard facts so everyone knows where they stand. Surely that’s the least the fans can expect?

Thankfully our wonderful manager has addressed our problems and wants to add Bolo Zenden to the squad. Excellent.

At a time when an extra defender or three might have come in handy, Steve Kean has decided what we need is a 35-year-old winger who hasn’t played for months. To coin a phrase – you really couldn’t make it up.

While we’re borrowing phrases and cliches, Kean’s announcement that March is a “massive month” and that “it’s time for his Rovers side to deliver” smacks of deja vu.

Back in November, Rovers embarked on a run of “six winnable games” which yielded just four points. Then we had the visit of Newcastle in February – “a good time to play them” we were told as they rolled up minus their African Nations Cup players. A 2-0 defeat suggested otherwise.

Fast forward to last weekend and Aston Villa rolled into town. Seemingly ”a team in crisis” it was clearly a good time to play them, yet by half-time we were 1-0 down and it could, and should, have been many more.

A slightly improved second-half performance salvaged a point from the first game of the “massive month”. Deja vu?

Wolves fit the bill in every aspect we’ve mentioned. Winnable game? Very. A team in crisis? 5-0 at Fulham and Roger Johnson turning up for training slightly tipsy says yes. A good time to play them? Probably not.

After that it’s Sunderland and Bolton. With your hand on heart, is there anyone out there who’d logically part with their hard earned cash and back Rovers to win with any degree of confidence? If there is you’re either very rich, deluded or Steve Kean – and look how well he’s thought of.

While March may well be a massive month, filled with winnable games against teams in crisis with the added bonus that we’re facing them at just the right time, please forgive those of us who aren’t feeling that same level of optimism at the moment.

Trotting out the blindingly obvious hasn’t been putting enough points on the board thus far and actions really do speak louder than words.

Every month has been a massive month this season – pity it’s taken our wonderful leader this long to catch on.

Out of the bottom three – at least until Man City get hold of us.

Rovers beating QPR was great – a result which gives some real hope relegation could be avoided. Before anyone thinks this is about to turn into a Steve Kean love-in – think again. While the first-half performance was decent, let’s not lose sight of the fact QPR were poor and our resident tactical genius nearly pulled out yet another collapse with his meddling.

Even when things are going his way, he somehow manages to always put his foot in it. At 3-0 the game should have been over, yet we end up hanging on with the back-four sitting so deep you’d have thought we were playing Barcelona. Thankfully we saw it through.

Hapless Kean then follows up with another gem from his list of things you’d wished he’d never said, by declaring Yakubu must now be worth £10 million. Sure, he’s had an excellent season but £10million for a slightly chubby, 29-year-old? You’ll be saying Andy Carroll‘s worth £35 million next.

The Chris Samba saga rolls on – with a ‘hamstring injury’ ruling him out of a comeback with the reserves. Any sympathy the fans had with him for speaking out against the owners is fast wearing thin and perhaps it would be best for all concerned if his ‘hamstring injury’ keeps him out until the end of the season. Alternatively, with Man City next up, perhaps Sky could set up the most expensive game of Wembley ever televised between Samba and Carlos Tevez.

Speaking of television, the BBC added further weight to the ‘we never stop learning in life’ argument last weekend.

After fully expecting my local to show the tea-time Tottenham v Newcastle game on Saturday, it came as something of a surprise to see some over-sized individuals flinging an oddly shaped ball around the screen.

When I told my better half that Rugby Union was nothing more than “a bunch of beer-swilling louts chasing an egg”, she decided this would be a good time to tell me that Rugby players ”looked really fit in their tight shorts”.

As you can imagine, this didn’t go down too well but, being an amicable couple, we agreed to disagree. However, in the spirit of fairness, and for anyone who may agree with the “really fit in tight shorts” argument, I suggest you put Martin Castrogiovanni into Google.

If that wasn’t bad enough, I then found out if Burnley played Man Utd, she’d want Burnley to win. Now I’m no lover of Fergie’s boys but that really is a step too far. Grounds for divorce? Yes. Pity we’re not married.

Another week’s gone by and Rovers are still in a mess.
There was much said about it being a good time to face Newcastle and Arsenal, yet two defeats would suggest otherwise.
In fairness, we created enough chances to win the game against the Toon, but Steve Kean’s post-match comments – strangely backed up by the local paper - suggesting we “deserved to win” – were wide of the mark. Creating chances is one thing, sticking them away is another and if you don’t do that you get exactly what you deserve – nothing.

As for the Arsenal game – shocking. Losing to the Gunners is no disgrace – surrendering without a fight is. Factor in Gael Givet’s stupid red card at 3-1 down and this was a day to forget.

Somehow, all is not lost. Don’t get me wrong, Rovers are poor, but avoiding the drop is still possible. The teams battling for survival – Wigan, Wolves, Bolton and QPR – are also poor and with all four still to play, Rovers have a chance – slim as it is.

Next up at Ewood are QPR – a must-win game if ever there was one. For that to happen we need our best team on the pitch and, like it or not, that means Chris Samba must play.

Kean admitted earlier in the week he “had no idea” if Samba would be involved this weekend – a ridiculous state of affairs. Support for Samba’s recent stance has been mixed, with some saying he should get on with his job, while others were glad he spoke out against the owners and the manager.

With transfer window now shut, Samba simply has to play. He’s made it clear he’s not 100% committed to the club under the current regime but, for now, there’s nowhere he can go.

Having made his point, Samba should now knuckle down and focus on trying to help Rovers stay up. Failure to do so would alienate those who sympathised with his position and potentially put off potential buyers in the summer.

He can even make it clear his views on the owners and Kean haven’t changed, but there’s a job to do and Samba now has to get on and do it. Once the season’s over he should then be allowed to leave. No-one loses face.

With Ryan Nelsen being allowed to leave – yet another daft decision – and Givet suspended for three games, Rovers’ centre-half options are Scott Dann and Grant Hanley. With Samba partnering either you’d have a little more confidence – together the’re an accident waiting to happen.

No idea whether he’ll play? Get it sorted and fast.
